Swampmeat

When one thinks of whiskey-soaked troubadours singing songs of woe and desperation, the Bullring isn’t exactly the kind of breeding ground you’d expect to harbour such hidden gems. That’s why local duo SwampMeat may be the breakout act at Fused’s SXSW showcase, the trip to Texas offering them an environment of dusty backroads and darkened bars that will undoubtedly flatter their music.

Combining the stripped-back honesty of country music with the urgency and rough hues of blues, SwampMeat are two brothers sharing in their heartache. Danny C poignantly spills his guts while T-Bird provides the backbeat, a setup that culminated in their debut longplayer ‘Double Dutch & Moonshine’. Last year, they shared a stage with Piney Gir, Dan Sartain, the Dexateens and Ladyfingers to name a few. Their highlight to date is a momentous New Year’s Eve show at London’s Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes but, after scoring a couple of dates in New York and Philadelphia in 2007, it seems they are finally making headway in the country their musical style originates from. From Birmingham to actual swamps? We’ll see.

Swampmeat play the Fused showcase at 8.30pm.
